In principle it is one box, one kingdom, because cards really get torn or covered with stickers. Still, three mini expansions are included, and players tell how they reset the game using sleeves, erasable markers or their own stickers. Others feel a restart is less exciting, since you already know which cards are coming.
Players say the differences are small: according to the designer, the second edition mainly adds extra rules text for later expansions plus some clearer wording. A few cards were changed, but players suggest simply starting now. By the time your kingdom is finished, you can happily begin again with a newer edition.
Many players suggest picking up the Distant Lands expansion: you go back to a small deck with quick rounds and lots of story, and you leave your old permanent cards behind. Another tip from the comments is to slow down and focus on developing your kingdom instead of discovering more and more, because that growing pile of permanent cards is what takes the fun away for some players.
