Why a board game ends up on sale
There are three different reasons, and each one tells you something different about the game.
Sometimes a publisher drops the price for a while, often around a new expansion or a reprint. That says nothing about quality; it is the publisher's decision and the price usually goes back up.
Sometimes we are making room. A title that moves slowly takes up shelf space, and marking it down beats waiting it out. That says little about the game either: moving slowly and being good go together perfectly well, especially for titles nobody has heard of.
And sometimes an edition is being replaced, by a printing with different artwork or one that includes an expansion in the box. The older version plays exactly the same.
What to check before you buy
The same three numbers as always: player count, the age on the box and the playing time. A discounted game that does not suit your group is still money you could have spent better.
Check as well whether you are looking at a base game or an expansion. In a sale the two sit side by side, and an expansion without its base game does nothing. If the title contains the word "expansion", make sure you own the box it belongs to.
