Start with who is sitting at the table. If you are playing with the whole family, pick something where everyone is busy at the same time and that you can explain while dessert is being served. Save a thick rulebook for later in the holidays, when the house is quiet and there is time for a longer game.
For big groups, have a look at the party games. Would you rather play together against the game than against each other? Then you will find plenty of choice among the cooperative games. Looking for a really big board game to give as a present? Then see the board games for Christmas.
With Hitster the music comes to the table. You hear a song and place it in the right spot on your own timeline. Parents, teenagers and grandparents each know different years, so everyone gets a round where it works.
Flip 7 is a card game in which you keep drawing until you dare to stop. One card too many and your round is gone. It works just as well with a big group as with three players, and after two minutes of explanation everyone is playing.
Want something with a board? Then get out Magical Athlete. Crazy characters race around the track, each with its own power, and nobody knows who will cross the finish line first. It plays with two to six players, ages six and up.
If you are spending Christmas as a couple, Patchwork is a classic. You take turns placing patches on your own quilt and try to leave as few gaps as possible. A game lasts half an hour, so there is always time for a second round.
Clever is a dice game for one to four players. Each time you pick one die and use it to fill in boxes on your own sheet. A good choice often earns you an extra action, which keeps everyone calculating until the last round. Between Christmas and New Year it also works perfectly well on your own.
Got a few days off in a row? Then The Lord of the Rings: Fate of the Fellowship fits the bill. You play together against the game and try to keep Frodo out of Sauron's hands. Expect more than an hour per game; the box is in English.
